You don’t need a lot of light (or even a green-thumb) to turn your office space into a garden.

There are plenty of indoor plants that are easy to care for and tolerant of low-light environments. Believe it or not, some even prefer shadier spaces! If you’re new to the world of plants or just want to fill a shadier space with a little extra greenery, then you’ve come to the right place! We’ve made a list of plants that do well in low-light, and won’t mind if you forget to water them once or twice.
 

ZZ Plants

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia, also known as a ZZ plant or Zanzibar Gem, is a tropical plant native to Zanzibar, Kenya, and Eastern Africa. You might spot large potato-like rhizomes under the surface of its potting mix. ZZ plants, with their wide, attractive, dark green leaves, are perfect for offices and homes. ZZ plants are pretty  tolerant of neglect and low-light conditions. So, they won’t throw a fit if you miss a watering or two. Its waxy, smooth leaves reflect sunlight and brighten rooms.

Water: Thrives in medium to low indirect light. Can tolerate bright indirect light. Not suited for intense, direct sun.
Light: Water every 3-4 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Increase the frequency with increased light.
 

Spider Plants

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum). Taking care of spider plants is easy. Not only can they tolerate multiple environments, but they are also pet-safe. They are especially good choices for bedrooms or offices as they are great at filtering out air pollutants.

Water: Provide them with well-drained soil. Give them plenty of water but do not allow the plant to become too soggy otherwise, it can lead to root rot.
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight.
 

Calathea

These beautiful plants have rainbow colours stripes on their large green leaves. They are native to South America and there are several members of the same family.

Water: Calatheas are humidity lovers. So this is a great plant to have if you're generally a person who over-water other plants.
Light: Medium to bright indirect light.

Nerve Plants/ Fittonia

Nerve plants, or fittonia, prefer brighter light, but they are also capable of growing in low light conditions. It is a species of flowering plant native to the rainforests of Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and northern Brazil. Just keep in mind that the more colorful varieties might look a little less bright when they’re exposed to less sun.

Water: Water nerve plant likes well-drained moist soil, but not too wet. Water moderately and let growing nerve plants dry out between waterings. Use room temperature water on the plant to avoid shock.
Light: Low to medium indirect sunlight.
 

Money Tree

These low-light plants are known for their braided trunk and are a symbol of good luck and financial success. Despite their appearance, money trees are easy to take care of, which makes them an ideal addition to your office space.

Water: Water well every one to two weeks.
Light: Money trees prefer bright, indirect sunlight (direct sunlight can lead to scorched leaves.
 

Snake Plants

This succulent is easy when it comes to maintenance. More light will help it grow, but it can tolerate darkness. Just keep in mind that overwatering can lead to root rot. Water: Oddly enough, snake plants do well when you forget about them. Allow soil to dry out before watering.
Light: More sunlight will help them grow but they can tolerate low light.
 

Dragon Tree

Their spiky leaves with hints of red make them a beautiful addition to anyone home, but too much direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. In other words, they need equal amounts of sun and shade.

Water: Dragon plants prefer under-watering to over-watering, so let the top few centimeters of soil dry out before watering again.
Light: These plants are happy in many different locations and varying light sources!

 

Rubber Ficus

Ficus elastica, also known as Rubber Plant, is a popular houseplant, owing to its ease of care and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. The plant is unconcerned with humidity and can survive at both low and high temperatures. It has large green, leathery glossy leaves that can grow up to 20cm long.

Water: Allow to dry out between watering, and avoid overwatering.
Light: These plants prefer bright, indirect light but tolerate less light than most other plants of its size.
