Are you looking for houseplants for your new apartment? Leaves House has plenty!
Why adopt a houseplant? Not only are they visually appealing, but houseplants are also great for your health. They freshen the air and eliminate harmful toxins such as carbon dioxide. Houseplants also increase productivity and reduce stress.
They’re essentially the perfect work companion.
At Leaves House we carry a variety of plants including easy to take care of and pet-friendly options.
Burros Tail
Unlike other plants at Leaves House, burros tail is a little trickier to take care of. While it belongs to the hardy sedum family, burros tail is physically fragile. If not handled delicately, the leaves may fall off. This can make watering or even moving the plant a delicate situation.
The best way to take care of it is let it be. Place it somewhere with bright, indirect light and check on it every once and awhile to ensure it has enough water.
On the bright side, all those little leaves can be propagated!
Dracaena (Dragon) Tree
Dracaena, or dragon trees, are stiff-leaved plants which grow green leaves edged with red. These plants are ideal for people new to the world of plants because they’re easy to grow indoors. Dragon trees are hardy, drought-tolerant plants with an aggressive root system.
When grown outside (in warm climates), tiny white flowers will appear in the spring and it can grow upwards of 20 feet tall. When grown inside, these houseplants can grow up to six feet tall (although indoor trees will rarely grow flowers).
While these plants are beautiful and easy to take care of, they are not recommended for people with pets. The leaves are safe for humans but can be toxic to cats and dogs.
Mistletoe Cactus
Mistletoe plants are a great option for people with pets as they are non-toxic. The thread-like succulent stems of the cactus can grow up to 15 feet long when grown indoors. This plant does not require a lot of grooming. However if the stems grow too long or leaves start to turn brown you can trim them for a cleaner appearance.
Hanging Plants
These hanging plants have heart shaped leaves which gives them the nickname sweetheart plants.
They are very hardy so if you forget to water them, they will tolerate the dry soil (but that doesn’t mean you can give up on watering them entirely!)
Yellow leaves usually indicate that you’ve over-watered your plant and brown leaves mean the plant needs more water.
Fairy Castle Cactus
The fairy castle cactus requires full sun and well drained soil. It’s name comes from the vertical stems that resemble the spires and turrets of fairy tale castles. Fairy castle cacti are easy beginning gardener projects. Simply place the cactus in abright, sunny location and when you water it, allow the soil to completely drain before irrigating.
Money Tree
Money trees are a symbol of luck and prosperity. Just keep in mind that they prefer bright, indirect light as direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Overwatering and excessive sunlight are common problems when trying to grow a money tree.
Spider
How do you keep your spider plant happy? It’s not too difficult.
Spider plants are one of the most adaptable of houseplants and easiest to take care of. They can grow in a wide range of conditions and other than brown tips, they suffer many problems. Give them well-drained soil and bright, indirect light and they will make a beautiful addition to your home.
Spider plants are also non-toxic to cats and dogs which makes them a great option for pet owners. Just make sure your cat doesn’t turn the leaves into a string toy.
Fittonia
Fittonia is a spreading evergreen with dark green, veined leaves. Usually the veins are a silvery-white colour. However you can find them in a variety of colours including pink, white and green.
Typically, Fittonia grows to a height of three to six inches and can trail up to 12 or 18 inches.
Fittonia requires a little more TLC than other plants. Soil needs to be kept moist otherwise the plant could collapse. On the bright side, they can recover quickly if they are thoroughly watered.
Fittonia plants are also sensitive to strong, direct sunlight and suffer from leaf burn rather quickly.
Cacti
We don’t just carry fairy castle cactus. If you’re looking for something low-maintenance and easy to take care of, you can visit us in-store for a variety of these plants.
Cacti thrive in dry, hot climates. They need minimal water and prefer well-drained areas. However, not all cacti are the same. Mammillaria, or pincushion cacti are usually watered every two weeks whereas moon cacti (the ones that come in bright reds, yellows and oranges) only need to be watered every three to four weeks.
Pothos
Pothos plants are easy to take care of and don’t require a lot of attention (perfect for anyone who isn’t known for having a green thumb!)
They’re easy to take care of as they enjoy a wide range of environments. You can put them in bright, indirect light or place them somewhere with low light. They enjoy dry soil or in vases of water.
Propagating these houseplants is also incredibly easy. All you have to do is take a cutting and place it in a glass of water. Wait for it to root and you’ll be growing your own plants in no time.
Chinese Money Plant (friendship, pancake)
Chinese money plants are also known as friendship plants or pancake plants due to their round, flat leaves.
These plants require well-drained soil (you don’t want Chinese money plants sitting in water!)
Choose whatever type of pot you like, but make sure it has drainage holes at the bottom. Let the soil dry in between waterings. Your plant will tell you it needs more water by getting droopy.
